CORTES ISLAND, BC
Cortes Island is one of many islands located between Vancouver Island and the mainland of British Columbia. My great-grandparents arrived from England in 1917 to clear their property so they could farm and raise their nine children here . These paintings were created early in the morning 'en plein air', during a recent visit to the old homestead.
My watercolour paintings focus on the West Coast of British Columbia, Canada, where I was born and raised. I'm trying to capture the beauty of the shorelines while they still exist as places to explore and enjoy. Our shorelines are now rapidly changing around the world due to our warming climate. These spaces, where the land meets the water, are becoming more threatened and threatening as floods increase and more plastics and fishing gear wash up on shore. As the oceans and rivers warm, seaweed, fish and shellfish are in decline. Locally the young salmon fry are frying in warm creeks while shellfish are cooking right on the beaches!
